Sustainability Statement
At Heather Isle Distillery, we recognise that our craft is inextricably linked to the wild, elemental landscape of Islay. Our commitment to sustainability is more than a policy; it is a promise to protect the natural resources—Peat, Barley, and Water—that define our single malt, ensuring we achieve Net Zero emissions across our operations by 2035.
Peat: Responsible Stewardship & Restoration
Peat is the smoky soul of Islay, but it is also a critical carbon sink.
-
Restoration Commitment: We are dedicated to the Peatland Water Sanctuary initiative, aiming to restore more than we extract. By 2030, we will have restored over 750 hectares of degraded peatland across Islay to capture carbon and enhance biodiversity.
-
Responsible Extraction: We adhere to the SWA Commitment to Responsible Peat Use, extracting only what is necessary and working with partners like the RSPB to ensure extraction sites are returned to thriving wetland habitats.
Barley: Sustainable Agriculture & Traceability
The quality of our whisky begins in the soil. We are moving toward a circular agricultural model that supports both the land and our farmers.
-
Regenerative Farming: We partner with local farmers to trial innovative agricultural methods, including cover cropping and reduced synthetic inputs to improve soil health and lower the carbon footprint of our grain.
-
Local Sourcing: We prioritise Scottish-grown barley, aiming for 100% traceability from grain to glass. By working with the International Barley Hub, we are developing climate-resilient cereals that require fewer resources to thrive.
Water: Conservation & Circularity
Water is our most precious ingredient, and its conservation is vital for Islay’s ecosystem.
-
Efficiency Targets: Through the SWA Water Stewardship Framework, we have implemented closed-loop cooling systems that reduce our water consumption by up to 75%.
-
Watershed Protection: We actively manage our local watersheds to ensure that our operations do not impact the natural flow or quality of Islay’s rivers, protecting the 'blessings of nature' for future generations.
The Road to Net Zero 2035
While the industry target is 2040, we have accelerated our timeline to reach Net Zero by 2035.
-
Innovative Technology: We are exploring cutting-edge solutions like green hydrogen to eliminate emissions from the distillation process entirely.
Through these actions, we ensure that every dram of our whisky not only honours our heritage but also secures a sustainable future for Islay.
