What is Shiatsu Massage Therapy?

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of relaxing, rebalancing and re-energising hands-on healing practiced for over 4,000 years. It can be used to maintain health or to treat a wide variety of conditions. In Austria, Germany and Switzerland Shiatsu therapy is completely or partially integrated into the public health care system.

Shiatsu is a holistic therapy, which regards disease, and other symptoms, as manifestations of energetic imbalance within the body. The theoretical concept of Shiatsu and Acupuncture is based on twelve channels of energy, called meridians, which run throughout the body. The meridians are associated with internal organs and reflect the energy of that organ in the way the energy is manifested.

Shiatsu massage ensures the harmony of body and mind, as it combines the wisdom, knowledge and experience of alternative healing. The massage is done employing various massage techniques where the therapist uses his/her fingers, knuckles, palms, elbows, knees and feet. The therapist also uses his/her own body weight, which is the reason why the massage is done on the floor on a special mattress. Light clothes are worn so that the therapist can apply pressure on the acupressure points and eliminate energy blockades.

Shiatsu is very versatile and can be tailored to the needs of each individual.
