Harris Tweed (Scottish Gaelic: Clò Mór (Big Cloth) or Clò Hearach (Harris Cloth)) is a tweed cloth made from pure virgin wool that is handwoven, dyed and spun by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

This definition, quality standards and protection of the Harris Tweed name are enshrined in the Harris Tweed Act 1993. To be stamped with the Orb Trade Mark, the tweed must be pure virgin wool dyed and spun, hand woven, and finished within the islands.

Harris Tweed is unique with its textures and colours inspired by the Hebridean landscape. When it was first woven it was a prickly, heavy but hard-wearing clo mor made from wool which had been dyed in various infusions of bark, flowers, heather, scrub and lichen to produce the muted natural colours of the landscape that was around them.

Production methods have changed since these early cottage-industry, labour intensive beginnings.
